View of Baronscourt

The home of the Duke of Abercorn’s family since 1612, Baronscourt is among that handful of old family estates in the British Isles which combine great historical and architectural interest with a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. The development of both is a story of constant regeneration from an early 17th Century Castle to a Palladian villa and, finally, to the present house which dates back to the 1770s but was subsequently extensively re-modelled. In the 20th Century fire badly damaged the house and in 1961 Hurricane Debbie devastated several hundred acres of deciduous woodland, but regeneration has continued unabated. After the hurricane, 110 acres of the estate were converted into an 18-hole golf course, Newtown-Stewart, laid out it in an attractive parkland setting, and now recognised as being one of the best inland golf courses in Ulster.

Throughout its history, each generation of the family has continued to ensure a programme of constant planting and landscaping of the park and gardens. The present Duke, the fifth, has introduced a number of new initiatives aimed at maintaining the economic viability of the Estate. The management of the Estate's wild herd of Japanese sika deer has been recognised with the Laurent Perrier Award for wild game conservation.
