Castello Vicchiomaggio Apartments |
The Castle was first called Vicchio dei Longobardi, the village of the Longobards, but during the Renaissance the name was changed to the present Vicchiomaggio (Maggio meaning May in Italian). The Castle occupies a strategic position on the hill dominating the Greve valley and, in the middle ages, was the first defence for Florence during its feuds with Siena. Mention of the Castle can also be found in the archives of Leonardo da Vinci who was a guest during a period of residence in the area. The academic Francesco Redi prepared his book ‘Bacco in Toscana’, published in 1685, at Vicchiomaggio. In it he describes the virtues of wine and the benefits of moderate drinking. The historic atmosphere of the Castle is totally retained and the building itself is maintained to the highest possible order. Secluded but not isolated, Vicchiomaggio is only 18 km from Florence and 4 km from the delightful market town of Greve in Chianti. The garden of the Castle, in ‘Formal Italian’ style, offers unrivalled views across the surrounding hills and vineyards as well as spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The surrounding private estate provides invigorating walks and the possibility of observing viticulture and the cultivation of olives directly in the field.

The Castello's Courtyard |
Greve in Chianti |
Castello Vicchiomaggio is an idyllic setting for holidays. The owners have cleverly converted parts of this listed castle to provide nine self catering apartments, conserving the original historic architecture and atmosphere. Each apartment is unique and well furnished, in the main with antique furniture, with small, simple kitchenettes to enjoy the occasional evening in. Each apartment is equipped with a small TV which receives some 141 channels, including BBC World, Sky and CNN. Stately Holiday Homes is pleased to be able to offer you a choice of three apartments in the Castle and full details are available from the bottom of this page. You can enjoy weekly holidays from Saturday to Saturday or if you require a shorter duration then you can stay for any number of nights starting on any day of the week, subject to availability.
There are various services on offer for the discerning traveller and wine enthusiast:
The splendid south facing 8 by 16 metres swimming pool is built on the hillside with unique panoramic views of the Greve valley and vineyards. It has a very large paved sun bed area and its protected position permits its use between May and October. There are changing rooms and washrooms beside the pool. There is an excellent restaurant off the courtyard of the main castle building.
Wine production and tastings are an important part of life at Castello Vicchiomaggio. Wine tastings and cellar visits are available throughout the year and ‘Cantinetta San Jacopo’ (the farm shop) is open for visitors to purchase the estate’s wine and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
The wine cellars meander under Castello Vicchiomaggio and visitors can see here how the estate's world renowned wine is produced. All tours are, though, on request. Monday is normally the most convenient day for guides to take the Castello’s resident guests on a tour.
There are tennis courts, golf courses, mountain-bike rentals all nearby. All services such as chemist, medical doctors, banks, post office, supermarket, specialist food shops and numerous restaurants are located in Greve in Chianti (about 4 km away).
Air access is via Florence (45 minutes) or Pisa (1½ hours).
In the words of the Castello’s owner, Tuscany has no industry, only wine and tourism. He, his wife, and team very much look forward to welcoming you at Castello Vicchimaggio.
