River Dee, Carrog. Raggart Hall have two private rods for daily hire on 1 ½ miles of the Dee, Wales’s best known river. One of the best grayling beats in the country, with stocked trout and wild salmon (rod fishermen account for 800 salmon per year on the Dee). Day ticket £20, fly only. Llyn Crafnant, Trefriw. A stunning 63 acre lake in an exquisite remote mountain setting accessed by a tiny winding road. Regularly stocked with rainbow trout up to 3lb to supplement the wild brown trout. There is a small café on site. Day tickets: Adult - £14, Under 16’s £7; Evening tickets (after 3pm) Adults £10, Under 16’s £6; boat hire: rowing boat £8, electric motor £14. Tel: 01492 640 818.

Llyn Dulyn & Melynllyn, Dolgarrog. Fly only mountain lakes stocked with rainbows and wild brown trout. A good hour’s walk to the lakes but well recommended. Tel 01286 832900. Free fishing.

Llyn Alwen, Cerrigydrudion. Stocked weekly with rainbow trout and wild population of brown trout. Also good fishing for perch. Day fishing pass £10.50, permit from Brenig visitor centre Tel: 01490 420463. Season 16th March - 3rd November (rainbow trout), 20th March - 17th October (brown trout).

Llyn Brenig, Cerrigydrudion. Internationally renowned reservoir which has hosted World fly fishing championships and regular international competitions. Fly only. Record rainbow 13 lbs, record brown trout 10lb 9 oz, both caught in 2001. 42 boats available for hire. Day ticket £14, part day, £12. Boat hire, weekend full day - £18.50, weekday full day - £16.50. Llyn Aled, Cerrigydrudion. Moorland reservoir with large numbers of roach, perch and pike up to 22lb. Occasional wild brown trout. No closed season for coarse fishing. 20th March - 17th October for brown trout. Full day pass £3.50. Permits from Visitor Centre, Llyn Brenig.

River Conwy & River Llugwy, Betws y Coed. Beats on both extremely pretty rivers. Good trout, sea trout and some salmon. Several named pools. Fishing with fly, spinner, shrimp and worm! River Clwyd, Denbigh. Good sea trout fishing on pretty river for most of the season with some salmon caught towards the end of the season. Day tickets can be purchased from Foxons Tackle, St Asaph, Tel 01745 583583, £5.

Llyn Elsi, Betws y Coed. Stocked mainly with American brook trout and also brown trout both up to 14 inches. Fly, spinning and bait fishing. March 20th - September 30th all legal methods, October 1st - October 17th fly only. Adult £12.50, junior £10. Permits from Betws y Coed Anglers Club Tel: 01690 710143.

Llyn Goddion Duon & Llyn Bychan. Lakes to north west of Betws y Coed, both stocked with brown trout. Fishing as for Llyn Elsi. Permits from Betws y Coed Anglers Club, Tel: 01690 710143, March 20th to September 30th, Adult £12.50, junior £10.
