Local Information for Sweethope Crofts, Ray Demesne

Sweethope Lough, 800ft up on the fells, is the source of the Wansbeck river and her feeder streams run directly out of the Wannies. Originally, there was only one lake, but the headwaters were dammed in the early 18th Century in order to generate a supply of power for the existing flour mill. Sweethope Lough is open to anglers from March 1st to December 31st. Brown trout are native to the lake which is also regularly stocked with large Rainbow Trout. Guests at Sweethope Crofts enjoy a free fishing permit for four sessions during their stay in season.

Northumberland is rich in historic houses and castles including Alnwick, Bamburgh, Chillingham and Warkworth Castles, Belsay Hall, Meldon Park and the spectacular Seaton Delaval Hall, the last mansion designed by Sir John Vanbrugh.

Dating from 1688 Wallington House was home to many generations of the Blackett and Trevelyan families, who all left their mark. The beautiful walled garden has varied collections of plants and an abundant conservatory. Longer estate walks encompass wooded valleys and high moorland. The house opens on 1st April 2004 after major structural refurbishment and the start of a programme of redecoration to restore some of the Victorian and other Trevelyan schemes.

Hadrian's Wall is to the south of Kirkwhelpington and the North Northumberland Heritage Coast offers miles of beautiful unspoilt beaches.

Northumberland National Park is the most northern National Park in England and stretches from the Scottish Border in the north to just south of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, covering an area of more than 1030 sq. kilometres (400 sq. miles). It offers some of the best hill walking found anywhere in Britain, ranging from short leisurely strolls and picturesque village rambles to more challenging hill and moorland treks.

Historic Otterburn with its famous mill is an ancient battle site on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, one of the finest parts of England for walking and climbing. Otterburn Mill still maintains an age old tradition of selling high quality textiles and craft products from a large Mill Shop which is housed in the original Mill buildings, alongside archive material, tools and machinery associated with a once thriving industry.

Newcastle, Gateshead and Alnwick all offer excellent shopping, along with a good selection of cinemas, theatres and concert venues.
